Temperament is merely the sediment of life experiences. Those who have not seen the world show a hint of timidity and restlessness in their gestures, while those who have experienced the ups and downs of life carry a sense of strength even in silence. This cannot be acquired through imitation; it is the scars that fate has etched upon us that ultimately transform into a calm confidence. The Tao can be understood but not learned; scriptures can be read but not recited; teachers can be revered but not followed; suffering can be endured but not praised; heaven can be respected but not deceived; people can be befriended but not sought after; fortune can be cultivated but not seized; power can be borrowed but not taken. By using history as a mirror, one can understand rise and fall; by using bronze as a mirror, one can correct attire and crown. By using people as a mirror, one can discern gains and losses. In everything, one should stop at the appropriate point; too much water overflows, a full moon wanes, and extreme things will revert. Seeing through complexity is a skill; choosing simplicity is a realm. Act with a heart of non-action while doing things with purpose. When someone establishes a persona, the game has begun. Preaching is futile; breaking a bone is the best textbook! Meditate in stillness, and hone oneself through practice.
